The Roluos Group consists of three main temples: Bakong, Preah Ko, and Lolei. These temples date back to the late 9th century and were part of Hariharalaya, the first capital of the Khmer Empire before Angkor.
1. Bakong – The First Temple-Mountain
• Time Needed: ~1 hour.
• Opening Hours: 6:00AM – 6:30 PM.
• Highlights:
• The earliest pyramid-style temple in Cambodia, built in 881 AD.
• Surrounded by a large moat, symbolizing Mount Meru.
• Stone carvings and sandstone towers with detailed bas-reliefs.
2. Preah Ko – “The Sacred Bull”
• Time Needed: ~30–45 minutes.
• Opening Hours: 6:00AM – 6:30 PM.
• Highlights:
• Built in 879 AD and dedicated to the ancestors of King Indravarman I.
• Features six brick towers with elaborate carvings.
• Three statues of Nandi (Shiva’s bull) in front of the temple.
3. Lolei – The Island Temple
• Time Needed: ~30 minutes.
• Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM.
• Highlights:
• Built in 893 AD, originally on an artificial island in the Indratataka Baray (now dry).
• Four brick towers with Sanskrit inscriptions.
• A modern Buddhist monastery now stands next to the ancient ruins.
Suggested Itinerary for Visiting Roluos Group
8:00 AM – Depart from Siem Reap (~15 km, ~30 min by tuk-tuk).
8:30 AM – 9:30 AM – Explore Bakong.
9:30 AM – 10:15 AM – Visit Preah Ko.
10:15 AM – 10:45 AM – Visit Lolei.
